Instruments – Flute
About the Instrument
The flute is a silver-plated woodwind instrument. The modern day flute is based on the old wooden flutes of the past, so it is still considered a woodwind instrument even though it’s made of metal. The flute plays the high notes in a band. Since the flute is the one of quietest of the band instruments, flute players typically sit in the front of the band. The flute section generally plays in unison.
Sound is produced on a flute by blowing air across the hole at the top which is called the lip-plate. The sound is changed by pressing keys in different combinations using both the left and right hands.
