We strongly believe music is a fundamental pillar of a well-rounded education. Paul Effman Music Service provides instrumental music programs to parochial and private schools across the country. Since 1981, we’ve provided tens of thousands of young people the special opportunity to learn music, a skill they will carry for the rest of their lives.
Our staff consists of over a hundred full-time professional music educators. Our talented staff include graduates from the top music schools in the country, including Julliard, Eastman School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Boston University, and many other top-tier music schools.
In addition to hiring the most well-qualified professionals with strong music education backgrounds, many of our educators also are professional performers, having performed with a diverse set of musicians, ranging from television appearances with rock and pop stars, to performers in the worlds finest orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera.
Simply put, we live music – day in and day out. Music is our passion, our drive, and completely engrained in our company culture at every level. We are all committed to cultivating the next generation of young musicians and helping them to write the soundtrack for their lives!

About Paul Effman
Paul Effman is the founder and director of Paul Effman Music Service (PEMS), the premier music education service for schools, students, and educators. He has been the director of the music service since founding it in 1980.
Throughout the 1970’s, Paul Effman worked with schools creating and directing band programs. In 1976, he became the Chairman of Music and the Band Director at Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa, FL. He maintained this position until 1978, when he became the Co-Chairman of Fine Arts at H. Frank Carey High School in Franklin Square, NY. In 1980, realizing the void that existed in private education, he started Paul Effman Music Service.
In 1980, he started an instrumental music program at St. Hyacinth School in Glen Head, NY. St. Hyacinth was the first school of the over 400 schools that PEMS currently serves today in the states of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and California. Paul Effman is the founder of the Long Island Honor Band Festival, an annual festival featuring the region’s most talented students for over 30 years. The Long Island Honor Band Festival has since been joined by Honor Band Festivals in over 8 other regions today.
Under his leadership, PEMS has expanded to include three retail store locations in Lagrangeville, NY, Plainview, NY and Poughkeepsie, NY. These stores offer private lessons, repairs, and feature all of the most desirable brands of instruments and accessories.
Today, Paul Effman is still directing the music service that he started over 30 years ago. He continues to perform locally, and was the featured clarinetist at Lincoln Center in 2005. More information about his jazz ensemble can be found at www.pauleffmanensemble.com. He and his ensemble are featured at many venues. Paul Effman currently resides in Syosset, NY, with his wife and family nearby. In addition to being a musician, he is a lifelong advocate for music education. The Effman tradition of music advocacy thrives today and will continue to thrive as the next Effman generation plays an active role in the administration of the music service.
About our Retail Stores
We’ve applied everything we have learned as educators for nearly forty years to up-end the musical instrument retail world. Using the same philosophy and culture applied to our music education service, we built several music stores around the needs of aspiring musicians.
Over the past decade, we’ve expanded several times, while adding many brands to our offerings. Paul Effman Music currently has a retail store in Plainview, NY and a retail store in Lagrangeville, NY. Our Lagrangeville store is a Yamaha Select dealership – offering not only the best prices, but the best “in-stock selection” of new Yamaha step-up and professional level wind instruments.
