The ukulele is a stringed instrument in the lute family. It is strummed or plucked like a guitar using the fingers, and has four strings.

The ukulele originated in the 19th century in Hawaii as an local adaptation of Portuguese guitars, and has since become a popular instrument around the world.

The ukulele can play melody (single notes) and chords, and a skilled player can perform both at once.
